Economics, Government and Figure Skating

Have you ever wondered why government licenses folk such as doctors, lawyers, hair cutters, contractors, school teachers and so on? The answer you get depends upon who you ask. The government says it is to protect you from bad ones. Government doesn't dwell on the money it collects or the enforcement bureaucracy it adds to itself. The people licensed say it is to assure their competence and exclude the incompetent. They don't dwell upon the reduction in competition from the higher barriers to entry and the increased fees they can therefore collect.

Maybe you've noticed that you, the customers who pay those fees still deal with malpracticing professionals, crooked and incompetent contractors and school teachers who don't teach kids to read and write.

This year, US Figure Skating agreed to license for its programs only those coaches who are certified and educated by the Professional Skater's Association. I guess figure skating isn't expensive enough yet.
